What to Do After You Lost Your iPhone

What to Do After You Lost Your iPhone Today

You checked your bag three times, looked under the couch and scoured the house, called your phone using a friend’s mobile and checked under your car seat . Your iPhone is in the wind. Now what? Shake off the initial shock as quickly as you can and get to work.

Here's the tip on what to do after you lost your iPhone. Every moment wasted not securing your smartphone is an extra opportunity for the person who is currently fiddling with your phone.

What to Do After You Lost Your iPhone? Here are the options:

Find My iPhone

Apple installed the Find My iPhone app on your device, and it can be a great help when your iPhone is missing in action -- if you activated the app before losing your phone, that is. Find My iPhone can be accessed from a Web browser or any other iOS device with your Apple ID.

One handy function lets you play a sound to help you locate your iPhone if it’s somewhere within earshot. Lost Mode gives you the ability to lock the phone, display a message and contact number on the iPhone’s lock screen and track your iPhone’s whereabouts on a map.

The only caveat to the map features is that the iPhone must be powered on and connected to the Internet. If all else fails, there’s an option to erase the iPhone. This protects you from identity theft, but strongly hinders your chances of reclaiming the smartphone.

Call Your Carrier

If you know that you won’t see your iPhone again, notify your carrier about the situation. This may save you from any charges thereafter, which is great if someone decides to use your phone's minutes and data. Some carriers deactivate the phone entirely, rendering it useless. Otherwise, someone could replace your SIM card and use the phone as if it were his.

Protect Your Identity

Chances are you have a lot of cached information on your iPhone -- personal information including bank account username, passwords, email logins, an address book and social media networks. All these things can be leveraged by someone to your detriment.

The best thing to do is change passwords for as many services as possible and check with services to see if you can remove your iPhone as an authorized device with that respective service. Otherwise, you could be subject to the repercussions of serious identity theft.

Notify Everyone

When you feel more secure in your own identity’s safety, it’s time to let people know what might be coming their way. Send out an email to everybody in your address book who you think might be affected by theft.

Someone may have already sent an email to your friends and family under your name by the time you realize your iPhone is missing. Post statuses and messages on your social networks warning people that there may be an impostor on the loose.

Compatible iPhones

Information in this article regarding the Find My iPhone capability applies to iPhones running iOS 6. Tools, interfaces and overall functionality may vary slightly or significantly with other versions or products.
